Teams are dialing in their lineups, pitchers are sharpening their rotation, and every inning carries extra weight. This past weekend offered a thrilling preview of what’s to come, headlined by relentless pitching performances in Ashland and an unforgettable, nail-biting finish in the inaugural Northwestern Invitational in Yellowknife.
When all was said and done, Bear Creek Gremlins Fastpitch and STK Fastball stood atop their respective tournaments, sending a clear message to the rest of the league as championship season approaches.
Dominance in Ohio: Bear Creek Gremlins Pitch Their Way to Ashland Glory
Over at the 5th Ashland Invitational, the Bear Creek Gremlins put on a pitching clinic across Brookside Main Diamond and Brookside West.
The action kicked off Friday evening under the lights. Hill United Chiefs made a massive statement early with a commanding 13–1 victory over the Midland Explorers behind the combined arm work of Marco Diaz and Ty Randerson. Shortly after, the Gremlins set the tone for their entire weekend as Jack Besgrove threw a gem to shut out the NorthEast Drillers 6–0.
Saturday brought a full slate of pool play where the Gremlins continued their defensive clinic. Behind a stellar performance from Kuba Osička, Bear Creek blanked Sandlot Merchants 2–0. Sandlot had bounced back from a earlier 3–0 loss to Wabash Pride, but couldn’t solve Osička. Meanwhile, the Chiefs kept their bats hot with a 9–1 rout of the PA Storm, and the Drillers stayed right in the mix behind Nahuel Saenz’s arm, topping Wabash 6–1.
As Saturday wore on, tight contests became the theme. Team 518 edged out Midland 6–5 thanks to Alex Baillargeon’s heroic relief effort, though Hill United quickly answered back by handing Team 518 an 8–0 defeat. The Gremlins then earned their third consecutive shutout of the tournament, an 8–0 victory over Wabash fueled by Gibbons and Osička. To cap off Saturday’s action, Huemul Mata guided the Drillers to a 6–0 win over Sandlot, while Midland pulled off a gritty 6–5 win over PA Storm.
By Sunday morning, the bracket was set, and every game was a dogfight. Midland opened with a 9–2 win over Wabash, while the NorthEast Drillers earned a statement 3–2 victory over Hill United behind Matias Etchevers. Bear Creek kept rolling with a 10–1 win over Team 518, while Sandlot closed out their tournament run with back-to-back victories—a 3–2 nail-biter over PA Storm and a 6–4 battle against Midland.
That set up a high-stakes championship showdown between Bear Creek Gremlins and the NorthEast Drillers. With Jack Besgrove back on the rubber for Bear Creek against the dual-threat of Saenz and Mata, the Gremlins proved why they were the team of the weekend. Delivering a clutch 3–1 victory, Bear Creek capped off an undefeated tournament run to take home the Ashland trophy.
Extras in the North: STK Fastball Outlasts Brokenbow in Yellowknife
Farther north at Tommy Forrest Ball Park, the inaugural Northwestern Invitational Fastball Championship brought elite ballplayers, incredible community support, and high-octane drama to Yellowknife.
Friday set the stage for a tight tournament: North American Braves opened with a 3–0 win over Yellowknife Merchants, Grande Prairie Pirates shut out Brokenbow Blazers 8–0, and STK Fastball telegraphed their intentions early with a 5–0 victory over the Braves and a 6–0 blanking of the Merchants.
Rain threatened to derail Saturday’s schedule, but the grounds crew and organizers worked tirelessly to ensure every single game hit the field. Grande Prairie dominated Can-West Thunder 10–1, but bracket play quickly reshuffled the narrative. Can-West rebounded with a 5–3 victory over the Braves, Yellowknife Merchants shut out Brokenbow 3–0, and Grande Prairie continued to roll with a 3–1 win over Can-West. To close the evening, STK Fastball notched another impressive 5–0 shutout against the host Merchants.
Sunday turned into an absolute marathon of fastpitch—and the ultimate test of endurance.
Brokenbow Blazers began a legendary day by taking down Can-West 2–0, while Yellowknife routed the Braves 14–0. Brokenbow immediately returned to the field to defeat Yellowknife 5–1. Meanwhile, STK Fastball flexed their offensive muscles in a 12–0 blowout of Grande Prairie.
Refusing to go home, Brokenbow stepped right back onto the diamond for their third game of the day, shutting out Grande Prairie 3–0 to punch their ticket to the finals.
The Championship Game was the crown jewel of the entire weekend. Electric energy filled Tommy Forrest Ball Park as STK Fastball matched up against the red-hot Brokenbow Blazers, who were playing in their fourth consecutive game of the day.
Behind an legendary marathon effort on the mound, Brokenbow pitcher Pablo Migliavacca kept STK’s explosive offense in check, earning himself Tournament MVP honors for his heroics. Pitch for pitch, play for play, neither team gave an inch, pushing the championship into extra innings tied 1–1. Finally, STK Fastball found the game-winning spark, breaking through in extra frames to claim a thrilling 2–1 victory and etch their names in the history books as the inaugural Northwestern Invitational Champions!
Beyond the scoreboard, the tournament was a massive triumph for the Yellowknife community. From the roaring crowds in the stands to the tireless work of the sponsors, umpires, volunteers, scorekeepers, announcers, grounds crew, and vendors, the event showcased the absolute best of men’s fastball.
