If the 1990s was the golden era of fastpitch, Darren Zack was the man holding the lightning bolts. Following yesterday’s announcement of Mark Sorenson as Player of the Decade, the ISC is thrilled to reveal that the legendary Darren Zack has been voted the ISC Pitcher of the Decade for the 1990s.
Known globally as the “Z-Man,” the Garden River, Ontario native didn’t just win games in the 90s—he redefined what was possible from the pitcher’s circle.
With the biggest overall win of all decades, Zack won the best pitcher award with 65.9% of the votes. Beating out legendary pitchers such as Michael White (17.9%), Brad Underwood (4.9%) and Peter Meredith (3.9%).
The Most Dominant Week in Fastpitch History
While Zack’s entire decade was a masterclass, his performance at the 1995 ISC World Tournament in Sioux City remains the stuff of legend. After an early loss, Zack put the Toronto Gators on his back and performed a feat that may never be repeated:
- 10 Wins, 0 Losses in a single tournament (An ISC Record).
- 69.66 Consecutive Scoreless Innings (Nearly 10 straight shutouts).
- 150 Strikeouts with a microscopic 0.10 ERA.
It was a display of endurance and sheer will that cemented his status as the most feared pitcher on the planet.
A Decade of Hardware
Throughout the 1990s, Zack was a perennial All-World selection, earning the honor six times in the decade across three different teams (Vancouver Magicians, Toronto Gators, and Tampa Bay Smokers). He was awarded the Leroy Zimmerman Memorial ISC Most Outstanding Pitcher Award three times in the 90s (’92, ’93, ’95) and again in 2000.
Zack’s 1990s Statistical Snapshot:
- World Titles: Won three ISC World Championships in the decade (’93, ’95, ’98).
- No-Hitters: Threw two ISC World Tournament no-hitters (’94, ’96).
- Perfect Game: Joined the elite ranks with a perfect game in 1996.
- Volume: Currently ranks 4th all-time in ISC career wins with 56.
The Ultimate Rivalry
The 1990s were often defined by the “immovable object vs. unstoppable force” matchups between Zack and Mark Sorenson. While they were fierce rivals in the ISC—with Zack’s rising fastball testing Sorenson’s legendary swing—they shared a mutual respect that defined the era. Fittingly, both were inducted into the ISC Hall of Fame in 2010.
A Hero On and Off the Field
A proud member of the Garden River First Nation, Zack’s impact extended far beyond the diamond. A recipient of the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, he has served as an inspiration for Indigenous athletes across North America. His 6’4″ frame and “power pitching” style made him an icon, but his precision and ability to change speeds made him a Hall of Famer.
“Darren Zack didn’t just throw past you; he dismantled your approach. He is, quite simply, the greatest pitcher many of us have ever seen.”
